The new vintage from one of our favourite producers of 'proper' red and white burgundy has just arrived in our cellars: The 2024s from Domaine Borgeot. We eagerly pulled the cork on a bottle to get an idea how the wines have fared since we tasted them back in November, and, based on this evidence, we are delighted to say the vintage is showing all the charm and excitement we experienced at the domaine. We have brought a selection of the '24s up to our shop in Aldeburgh for you to try, available in-store and also online, here.
In a vintage that required phenomenal levels of hard work in the vineyards, it seems apparent to us that the ever-energetic Laurent Borgeot yelled "hold my beer!" and rose to the challenge, producing the most amazing set of wines. We often describe down-to-earth, no-nonsense domaines like this as 'artisan', but this year (at the risk of finding ourselves in 'Pseud's Corner') we felt they moved from artisanal to artistry. In short, the 2024s from Borgeot are wines that everyone should have in their cellar.
In terms of style, the white wines had lots of ripe citrus and even pineapple notes, with silky texture and fresh acidity. At just £24.50 per bottle, the 2024 Bourgogne Blanc 'Clos Carbonade' is a favourite white burgundy for many of our customers, and is outstanding this year. This walled vineyard with vines averaging 63 years of age produces excellent wines in most years, but we found the '24 one of the best vintages we have tasted.
Don't let the Carbonade's value distract you from the even greater treasure of the village wine, their flagship white: the 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is a super-refined version of itself, with classic Burgundian notes of minerality, hawthorn blossom, and hazelnuts on the nose and palate. Laurent even paused to fetch us some 'noisettes' from Piedmont that he buys from Hess, the posh cheesemongers in Beaune, which smelt and tasted like the Platonic ideal of a hazelnut, highlighting the precision of aroma in the Chassagne.
The reds were equally enjoyable, if destined to be enjoyed in the next 3-7 years, with more of a silky character to the tannins than is the norm here and lots of dark, powerful fruit. The Bourgogne Pinot Noir is our go-to red burgundy for regular enjoyment and continues to stand out for amazing value at £24.50.
